Yonsei University Division of Design and Art is leading the design education by understanding the cultural and industrial paradigm of the rapidly changing era and researching new trends and applying holistic design solutions in order to solve diverse design problems. The division runs three major tracks: Industrial Design Track, Visual Communication Design Track, and Digital Art Track. Each track has an educational goal towards enhancing the professional expertise as well as providing outstanding and distinguishing design education and research opportunities through interdisciplinary studies between the tracks.

Educational Goal

  1. The Division of Design and Art seeks to improve the quality of human life and contribute to humanity through the convergence of excellent design and art in the present/future culture and environment.
  1. The Division of Design and Art opens a new prospect of the design art education by providing creative and interdisciplinary programs that integrate Art with Design, and Technology with Business. The division aims to cultivate leaders in related fields who can demonstrate their abilities in product development, communication, and creativeness in media art and forecast the future culture and life.
  1. The Division of Design and Art is aimed at delivering an international level of creative design art education by establishing worldwide communication, developing creative sensibility as well as rational thinking capabilities, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration with humanities, art, and science.

Industrial Design

Industrial Design is an industrial production technique and also a state-of-the-art scientific production art that creates harmonious and beautiful material environment of human life and represents the modern times. A culture in Industrial Age is created based on how people live and behave with industrial products in the material environment. The role of industrial designer is to promote extensive social integration and improve cultural development by creating optimal environment for the society and individuals through design practices. Industrial Design discipline researches and develops methods that help designers to achieve their professional goals in more rational and effective ways. The discipline has a role in creating optimal products by scientifically and effectively grafting the material, emotional, and sensible demands of human onto the most up-to-date technology. The discipline also foresees the future physiological conditions and cultural contexts of human society in tune with the informationalized product development and production environment.

Educational Goal

  1. In addition to the foundation and liberal arts courses of Division of Design and Art, Industrial Design Track offers diverse introductory and elective courses so students can explore further about the major and learn the fundamentals of the formative arts and computer application skills related to design practice.
  1. Industrial Design Track provides introductory courses in which students can discover the basics and fundamentals of the industrial design field and acquire scientific knowledge associated with the field.
  1. Industrial Design students will study field-oriented theory and practice and learn how to apply the MAN-MACHINE-INTERFACE-RELATION theory as an approach to systematically develop complex cutting-edge industrial products.
  1. Industrial Design Track offers three practice-oriented project options to choose from: industrial-educational cooperation project, experiment project, and theoretical research project. By implementing professional education, Industrial Design Track aims to train students as design elites who will demonstrate their leadership in related fields.

Visual Communication Design

Visual Communication Design involves creative activities that aim to effectively and inclusively deliver information, human’s intention, and image of things of the industrial society in the mass media era. Visual communication designers should be able to create influential visual formats that can persuade, transform, and educate the public. Accordingly, visual communication designer are expected to have ethical responsibility to serve the public and sensitivity and capability to produce values that comply with the socio-cultural context. Visual Communication Design Track at Yonsei University aims to provide integrative design education that cultivates visual communication designers who will lead the communication culture of the knowledge-based and informationalized society with creative sensibility and scientific thinking capabilities. There are four major areas in visual communication design: visual information design, editorial and advertising design, media design, and cultural contents design. The goal of Visual Communication Design Track is to nurture talented students to gain commonly required elementary ability and professional competence in executing purposeful and original visual communication as graphic designers. Based on the visual perception sensitivity and design thinking abilities, we research and develop communicative design methods that help designers to aware-understand-express-apply their creative capabilities and present integrative solutions to design problems. Furthermore, we actively support open design education such as multidisciplinary design convergence courses, international exchange programs, industrial-educational cooperation projects, and internships in order to dynamically cope with the most up-to-date computer info-communication technology development and the global industrial trend.

Educational Goal

  1. In addition to the foundation and liberal arts courses of Division of Design and Art, Visual Communication Design Track Students will develop visual perception modeling and expression skills through the introductory and exploratory elective courses.
  1. Visual Communication Design Track provides introductory courses in which students can learn the basic and traditional design principles and various design ideation skills and expression techniques.
  1. Based on the field-oriented theory and practice, Visual Communication Design students will learn the research-analysis methods for systematic design development and also practice and apply the concept-oriented visual design process.
  1. As an advanced course of Visual Communication Design Track, students will choose one of the three practice-oriented project options: industrial-educational cooperation project, experiment project, and theoretical research project. Through the process of preparing, performing, and presenting the final project and portfolio, Visual Communication Design Track aims to train students as design elites who will demonstrate their leadership in related fields.

Digital Art

The goal of Digital Art is to provide convergent and practical education that encompass art, design, music, computer engineering, electronic engineering, and mechanical engineering in order to improve the space-to-space, human-to-human, and human-to-computer interaction and communication. In 2009, Division of Design and Art at Yonsei University established the Digital Art Track in addition to the existing Industrial Design Track and Visual Communication Design Track. Digital Art Track aims to lead the major education in digital art discipline and foster creative realizers who envision future by creating new concepts and forms. Digital Art is a future-oriented and interdisciplinary design art field that studies the interaction and interface operated in a digital media and computer technology based environment by utilizing means of digital media, video, sound, and programing.

Freshmen include the foundation and liberal arts courses and exploratory courses that study the fundamentals of digital expression and computer. Juniors learn digital language, sense and logic mainly through the basic digital art courses. Sophomores develop digital-based creation abilities through physical computing, DVA, interactive workshop, and new media planning. Seniors learn and experience the experimental and operational aspect of digital art through kinetic art, digital installation, and lighting design. Furthermore, Digital Art Track provides courses linked with Industrial Design Track and Visual Communication Design Track so students can learn technology, art, and design in integrative ways. We are constantly developing and operating education programs to actively cope with the digital age.
